Furniture Assembly Tips: Your Holiday Delivery and Setup Plan

Rustic wood double dog crate end table with two dogs resting inside, styled with books and a lamp in a bright living room with a stone fireplace

The best furniture assembly tips for getting new furniture ready for the holidays come down to timing: order as early as you can, inspect every box on delivery day, unbox and check the parts within a few days, and assemble one piece at a time with two people, leaving a buffer before guests arrive. Most flat-pack pieces take somewhere between 30 minutes and a few hours to build; our electric standing desks, for example, take about 1.5 hours with two people, and a large wardrobe takes longer.

Whether you are replacing a worn-out dresser or planning a guest room upgrade, this plan walks you through a holiday timeline, what to check when the boxes arrive, the tools to have ready, realistic assembly times, safe lifting and anchoring, and why to keep the packaging during the return window. If you are still shopping, browse our furniture on sale.

Key takeaways

  • Order early and, before checkout, visit our shipping policy for current dispatch and delivery times. Holiday shipping is busy, and no store can promise a date for everyone.
  • Inspect boxes on delivery day. Count them, photograph any damage, and report damaged or defective items within 14 days.
  • Check parts before you build. Lay out panels and hardware against the parts list first.
  • Two people for anything large. Most of our wardrobes, desks and dressers recommend two people; our largest armoire calls for three.
  • Anchor tall and heavy pieces to the wall before you fill them.
  • Keep the boxes until you are sure the piece stays: returns need unused, unassembled items in original packaging.

A holiday furniture delivery timeline

Work backward from the day guests arrive. This timeline gives you room for shipping, a weekend of assembly and a spare few days for surprises.

When What to do
As early as possible (Black Friday weekend or sooner) Measure the room and delivery route, order, and read the shipping policy. Note the order confirmation and tracking emails.
While it ships Clear the room and the path from the front door. Line up a helper for delivery day and an assembly weekend. Book a building elevator if needed.
Delivery day Count boxes, check for damage, photograph anything crushed or torn, and move boxes inside.
Within 2 or 3 days Open boxes in the room where the piece will live, check panels and hardware against the parts list, and contact us about anything damaged or missing.
Assembly weekend Build one piece at a time, biggest first. Anchor tall furniture. Unpack compressed sofas so the foam can expand.
At least 3 days before guests Finish, tighten hardware, fill drawers, and recycle or store the packaging.

The buffer matters most for upholstered pieces. Our compressed modular sofa needs up to 72 hours for its foam to expand fully, so open it at least three days before guests sit on it. To plan the measuring step, use our furniture measuring checklist.

How to prepare for furniture delivery

FUFU&GAGA ships free to customers in the 48 contiguous US states and DC, with delivery to your front door. That means the trip from the front door to the room is yours, so preparation makes delivery day easy:

  1. Clear the route. Move rugs, shoes, plants and holiday décor away from the entry and hallways.
  2. Plan where boxes go. Pick a dry spot just inside the door, or carry boxes straight to the final room if you have help.
  3. Protect floors and walls. Lay down a moving blanket or flattened cardboard so heavy cartons do not scratch the floor.
  4. Keep pets and children away from the door and the boxes while you carry them in. Box cutters and loose hardware are hazards.
  5. Have a helper ready. Many furniture boxes are heavy and long; one person should not carry them up stairs alone.

What to check when the boxes arrive

Inspect the shipment before you throw anything away. A few minutes at this point protects your order:

  • Count the boxes. Some items ship in more than one. Our 3-door MDF armoire is packed in two boxes, and our L-shaped standing desk ships in two. Match the count on the label or order.
  • Watch for damage. Check corners and edges for crushing, punctures or water marks. Photograph the box from several sides before opening.
  • Open carefully. Cut only the tape, with a shallow blade, so you do not scratch panels inside.
  • Report problems quickly. FUFU&GAGA handles damaged or defective items reported within 14 days at no cost. Email customerservice@fufugaga.com with your order number and photos.

Under the FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller that can't ship within the time it stated must tell you, give a revised date or say it can't, and offer you the option to cancel for a refund.

Where to unbox and assemble furniture

Assemble large items in the room where they will be used. Tall wardrobes and cabinets are usually built lying down, then stood up, and carrying an assembled armoire through doorways risks damage to the piece and the walls. You need a clear, flat area about the size of the piece lying on its back, plus room to walk around it.

Unpack onto a rug or the flattened box so finished surfaces do not get scratches, and keep the area clear of guests, pets and children until the job is complete.

What tools do you need for furniture assembly?

Most flat-pack furniture includes the small hardware and often an Allen key. Check the product page and the assembly instructions (in the User Manual tab on our product pages) for the tool list and the model number. A basic kit covers almost everything:

  • A Phillips screwdriver, plus a flat-head for turning cam locks
  • A rubber mallet for tapping wooden dowels into place
  • A level and a tape measure
  • A cordless drill only where the manual allows it; many of our pieces say to avoid power tools, because they can strip screws or crack panels
  • Small bowls or a muffin tin to organize screws and bolts by size
  • An anchoring kit and a stud finder for tall or heavy pieces

How long does furniture assembly take?

It depends on the piece, the number of parts and whether you have help. These times come from FUFU&GAGA product pages where they are listed; the rest is general guidance:

Piece Assembly time People
134" compressed modular sectional No tools; unbox and arrange, then up to 72 hours for the foam to expand Not listed
78.7" double dog crate end table About half an hour 2
55.1" L-shaped electric standing desk About 1.5 hours 2
59" walnut electric standing desk About 1.5 hours 2
Large wardrobes and armoires Longest of all; schedule them first 2 or 3

First-timers should add time: one mistake, such as a panel in backward, can mean undoing several steps. For a step-by-step method, read our guide on how to assemble flat-pack furniture.

Furniture assembly tips that save time

  1. Read the assembly instructions first, start to finish, before you touch a screw.
  2. Check every part against the parts list. If something is missing, stop and contact us; our replacement parts service reviews requests within 24 hours.
  3. Sort the hardware into labeled groups so you never use a long screw where a short one belongs.
  4. Follow the steps in order. Manufacturers sequence steps for a reason, especially drawer slides and back panels.
  5. Leave bolts slightly loose until the frame is aligned, then tighten. Avoid over-tightening screws into MDF.
  6. Check that the frame is square by measuring both diagonals; they should match before you nail on a back panel.
  7. Level it and use leveling feet if the piece has them, so doors and drawers close properly.
  8. Finally, do a last check: retighten all screws and bolts and compare the finished dimensions with the instructions before loading the piece.

Should you assemble it yourself or pay for assembly services?

Doing the task yourself saves money, and most flat-pack furniture comes with labeled parts and step-by-step instructions. Local assembly services make sense if you are short on time before guests arrive, are building several large pieces such as a bed, dining set and wardrobe, or have concerns about lifting heavy panels. Rates vary by area and by job, so ask for a quote in advance and share the product page so the installer can see the dimensions and parts list. Pre-assembled furniture skips the process entirely, but it is bulkier to ship and harder to carry through narrow doors.

Lift safely and anchor tall furniture

Lift with your legs, keep the load close, and never twist while carrying. Use two people for anything long or heavy, and three when the product page says so.

Once a tall piece is standing, secure it to the wall before you fill it. The CPSC's Anchor It! campaign recommends anchoring all furniture with drawers, doors and shelves to prevent tip-over injuries and deaths. Many of our wardrobes include a tipover restraint, but not every piece does; check the product page, and buy a kit if one is not included. Some display cabinets also come with wall-mounting hardware and require installation. Our guide on how to anchor a bookcase to the wall shows the steps.

Keep the packaging during the return window

FUFU&GAGA accepts returns within 35 days for unused, unassembled items in their original packaging. Shipping or processing fees may apply to change-of-mind returns. So:

  • Confirm the piece fits, and that you want it, before you start assembly.
  • Keep boxes and foam inserts flat in a garage or closet until you are sure.
  • Keep the manual and any spare hardware; you may need them for a future move or a replacement part.

Furniture bought at fufugaga.com also carries our 2-year limited warranty (1 year for fabrics, cushions, leather and LED lighting components).

134" Large U-Shaped Modular Sectional Sofa with 5 Pillows

The easiest big piece to get in before guests. Give the foam up to 72 hours to expand fully. Covers are removable for cleaning.

Common issues and how to avoid them

  • Ordering too late. Order in advance and check the shipping policy; leave a buffer for carrier delays on your shipment.
  • Throwing out boxes on day one. You need them for a return or a damage claim.
  • Building in the wrong room. Assemble large items where they will stand.
  • Skipping the parts check. Finding a missing panel halfway through costs a weekend.
  • Leaving tall pieces unanchored while children or pets are around.

FAQ

How long does furniture assembly take?

Small flat-pack pieces often take under an hour, and larger ones a few hours or more. On our product pages, the double dog crate takes about half an hour with two people, and our electric standing desks about 1.5 hours with two. Large wardrobes take longest, so schedule them first.

Why is assembling furniture so hard?

Mostly because of rushing: skipped steps, mixed-up screws and missing parts discovered halfway through. Reading the instructions first, sorting hardware, checking parts and working with a second person solve most problems. Leave bolts loose until the frame is square, then tighten.

What are the downsides of flat pack furniture?

You have to build it, which takes time, tools and often two people, and boxes can be long and heavy to carry from the front door. The upside is that flat-pack furniture ships in compact boxes that fit through tighter routes than an assembled piece.

Can I return furniture after assembling it?

Our 35-day return policy covers unused, unassembled items in original packaging, so check the fit before you build. Damaged or defective items reported within 14 days are handled at no cost, and our replacement parts service can send missing or broken parts.
