Reviews
FUFU&GAGA kitchen islands are freestanding storage islands that add extra workspace, cabinets and, on many models, room for a stool or two, without a renovation. Sizes run from 47-inch compact islands to statement pieces over 9 feet long, and most sit near standard counter height (about 36 inches). To choose the right one, measure your floor space, keep a clear walkway on every working side, then compare storage, seating and countertop options.
Find the Right Size Kitchen Island
Start with the footprint, not the style: the perfect kitchen island for your home is one you can walk around easily. Measure the open floor area, then subtract the aisle you want to keep: the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines recommend a work aisle of at least 42 inches for one cook (48 inches for two) and at least 36 inches for a walkway. Island depths in this collection range from 23.6 to about 39 inches, with most close to 30 inches.
| Island size | Width | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Compact | 47 to 55 in | Small kitchens, extra prep space, 1 to 2 stools |
| Mid-size | 59 to 63 in | Everyday prep plus 2 stools; drop-leaf and rolling options |
| Large | 77 to 95 in | Open-plan kitchens, double-sided storage, 3 or more stools |
| Extra-long | 110 in | Large rooms that want an island and dining surface in one |
Our kitchen island dimensions guide walks through height, width and clearance in detail.
Choosing a Kitchen Island With Storage
A kitchen island with storage should hold what you reach for while cooking, creating extra storage right where you work and saving trips across the room. Select the storage type that matches what you keep there.
- Cabinets and drawers: enclosed cabinets keep pots and pans out of sight, while drawers handle utensils and linens. The 47.2" white island with 14 drawers is built around drawer storage.
- Double-sided storage: several models open from both faces, useful when the island stands in the middle of the room, such as the 77.3" black island with butcher block top.
- Display and bar storage: glass doors, built-in lights, stemware racks and wine compartments, as on the 77.6" black island with lights and glass doors.
- Specialty features: adjustable shelves, open shelving and, on one farmhouse model, a tilt-out trash cabinet with towel bars.
Seating, Drop Leaves and Extendable Tops
For a kitchen island with seating, plan about 24 inches of counter length per stool and roughly 15 inches of knee space at counter height, per NKBA seating guidance. Drop-leaf and extendable designs add that ledge only when you need it: the 59.1" island with extendable tabletop opens a 15.7-inch-deep leaf, and the 63" rolling island with drop leaf adds a 7.8-inch leaf on wheels. An island without seating is just as useful as a pure prep and storage station.
Countertops, Materials and Weight Capacity
Tops include butcher block style wood, marble veneer, tempered glass and manufactured wood finishes in white, black, natural and dark brown. Bases are mostly MDF-based manufactured wood, some combined with solid wood or an iron frame. Listed weight capacities are mostly 150 to 330 lb, with 400 lb on the 94.5" black island. Check "Weight Capacity" in each product's specifications before loading the workspace with small appliances, and compare dimensions, features and price side by side on each product page.
Kitchen Island or Kitchen Cart?
Stationary islands are heavier and steadier, with more cabinet space. Rolling island carts are lighter and move on wheels, a great fit for small kitchens and rentals. Compare both in our kitchen island vs kitchen cart guide.
Assembly, Stability and Delivery
Kitchen islands require assembly, and spec sheets suggest two people for several models. Once assembled, level the island and lock any casters; if it still slides on a smooth floor, see how to secure a freestanding kitchen island.
Orders from fufugaga.com ship free to the 48 contiguous states and DC, and most in-stock orders leave our US warehouses within 48 hours, with typical delivery in 7 to 9 days. You also get 35-day returns on unused, unassembled items, an exclusive 2-year limited warranty and a replacement parts service. Need more room for food and dishes? Kitchen Islands FAQs
How much space do you need around a kitchen island?
The NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines recommend a work aisle of at least 42 inches for one cook and 48 inches for two, and at least 36 inches for a walkway. Behind stools, allow 36 inches if people edge past and 44 inches if they walk past. Measure from the island edge to the nearest counter, appliance or wall. Our kitchen island dimensions guide shows how to apply these numbers to your floor plan.
Can a kitchen island be freestanding?
Yes. The islands in this collection are freestanding furniture rather than built-in cabinetry: they are not fixed to the floor or walls, so you can reposition them if you rearrange the kitchen. Freestanding islands usually stay put under their own weight, but on smooth floors you can add anti-slip pads, lock the casters or fasten the base to the floor. See how to secure a freestanding kitchen island for drill and no-drill options.
Is it okay to have a kitchen island without seating?
Yes. An island without seating can be narrower and needs less clearance, because you don't have to plan knee space or room behind stools. It works well as a prep station and storage hub next to the range or sink. If you want occasional seating later, choose a model with a drop leaf or extendable tabletop that opens into a small breakfast bar only when you need it.
What is the difference between a kitchen island and a kitchen cart?
A kitchen island is larger, heavier and stationary, with more cabinet and drawer storage and a steadier work surface. A kitchen cart is smaller and lighter and rolls on casters, so you can move it where you need it or push it aside. Rolling island carts sit between the two. Read the full comparison in kitchen island vs kitchen cart.
Do you have rolling kitchen islands with a drop leaf?
Yes. The 63" rolling kitchen island cart with drop leaf has a 7.8-inch leaf, casters and a storage cabinet, and the 63" farmhouse rolling island adds a 7.9-inch leaf plus a tilt-out trash cabinet. For a deeper surface, the 59.1-inch island has an extendable tabletop with a 15.7-inch leaf, though it does not roll.
Can I put a kitchen island in a small kitchen?
Often, if you can keep a clear aisle of 36 to 42 inches on each working side. In a one-wall kitchen with 24-inch counters, a 24-inch-deep island needs roughly 10.5 feet of room width once you add a 42-inch work aisle and a 36-inch walkway. Narrow, rolling and drop-leaf islands help in tight spaces. See small kitchen island ideas for layouts that fit.
Do kitchen islands come assembled?
No, kitchen islands ship unassembled and the product specifications list assembly as required, with two people suggested for several models. Larger islands are heavy, so assemble them close to where they will stand. If a part arrives damaged or goes missing, our replacement parts service reviews requests within 24 hours. Contact customerservice@fufugaga.com with your order number.
How is a kitchen island delivered, and can I return it?
Orders from fufugaga.com ship free to the 48 contiguous US states and DC (not to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or PO boxes). Most in-stock orders dispatch within 48 hours from US warehouses, typical delivery takes 7 to 9 days, and items arrive at your front door. Unused, unassembled items in original packaging can be returned within 35 days; damage reported within 14 days is handled at no cost.
