A 9-drawer dresser is a wide, low dresser with nine drawers, usually arranged as three columns of three, which is why it is also called a triple dresser. Most models are about 55 to 71 inches wide, 30 to 37 inches tall and about 16 inches deep, so a 9-drawer dresser is right for you if you have a wall at least 6 to 12 inches wider than the dresser and want ample storage for two people or a full wardrobe of folded clothes in one piece.
This guide explains how to size one against your wall and bed, what drawer depth and runners to look for, how LED and charging versions work, how to use one outside the bedroom, and why anchoring matters. Then it compares six models from the FUFU&GAGA dressers and chests collection.
Key takeaways
- Typical size: most of our 9-drawer dressers are 55 to 71 in wide, 30 to 37 in tall and 15.4 to 19.7 in deep.
- Wall and bed: a 60 to 63 in dresser lines up with a queen bed's 60 in width; a 70.9 in model suits a king's 76 in.
- Drawer depth: 4.5 to 5 in inside suits tees, socks and underwear; 7.5 to 8.4 in deep drawers take sweaters and jeans.
- Clearance: plan about 30 to 36 in of open floor in front so drawers open fully and you can stand at them.
- Anchor it: CPSC recommends anchoring dressers to the wall; every 9-drawer dresser we sell should be secured.
What is a 9-drawer dresser?
A 9-drawer dresser is a horizontal dresser with nine drawers. In the classic triple dresser layout, three columns of three drawers sit side by side. Other layouts use three small drawers across the top with six larger drawers below, or nine identical drawers. A standard double dresser usually has six drawers in two columns, so a triple dresser is the wider, higher-capacity step up.
Because nine separate drawers let you sort clothes and accessories by category, a 9-drawer dresser works well for couples sharing one piece, for families who want a drawer per person or per category, and for bedrooms without a closet. The tradeoff is visual and physical weight: it needs a long wall and our triple-style models weigh about 110 to 200 lb.
If you are still deciding between a wide dresser and a tall chest, see our guide to dresser vs chest of drawers.
Is a 9-drawer dresser right for you?
| A 9-drawer dresser fits if | Consider something else if |
|---|---|
| You have a clear wall of 62 in or more | Your longest free wall is under 55 in |
| Two people share one dresser | You mostly hang clothes (an armoire may suit better) |
| You want a wide top for a TV, mirror or decor | You need a narrow, tall footprint |
| You want one piece instead of two dressers | You can't anchor to the wall |
How wide should a 9-drawer dresser be for your wall and bed?
Start with the wall. Measure the clear wall length between corners, doors, windows and radiators, then subtract at least 3 to 6 inches on each side so the dresser doesn't look jammed in. A 63 in wide dresser needs a clear wall of about 69 to 75 inches to look comfortable.
Should a dresser be wider than the bed? It doesn't have to be. A standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide and a king is 76 inches, so a 60 to 63 in triple dresser sits in balance with a queen bed on the opposite wall, while a 70.9 in model is the closer match for a king. If the dresser goes on the same wall as the bed, leave space for nightstands first.
Then check the floor in front. Drawers on a 15.7 in deep dresser extend roughly 12 to 14 inches, and you need room to stand behind an open drawer, so plan about 30 to 36 inches of clear floor between the dresser and the bed or any walkway. For standard heights and depths by dresser type, see our standard dresser dimensions guide.
| Clear wall length | Dresser width that fits | Example from our range |
|---|---|---|
| 53 to 60 in | Up to about 47 to 52 in | 47.2 in LED dresser (not a triple layout) |
| 61 to 68 in | About 55 in | 55.1 in traditional 9-drawer dresser |
| 69 to 76 in | About 61 to 63.4 in | Most 63 in triple dressers |
| 77 in or more | About 71 in | 70.9 in white/gray dresser |
What drawer depth and runners should you look for?
The number of drawers matters less than what fits inside them. Check the interior drawer height, width and depth, not just the outside size. In our range, interior drawer heights run from 3.5 in on a compact LED model to 8.4 in on the deepest triple dresser, and interior depths from 11.8 to 13.8 in.
| Interior drawer height | Good for |
|---|---|
| 3.5 to 4 in | Socks, underwear, jewelry, accessories, makeup |
| 4.5 to 5.5 in | T-shirts, leggings, pajamas, folded shirts |
| 7.5 to 8.4 in | Sweaters, jeans, hoodies, towels and linens |
Runners decide how a dresser feels every day. All of the dressers in this guide use metal slides, and most list safety stops, which keep drawers from pulling all the way out. Some add roller glides; others use full-extension rails that let you reach the back of the drawer. Also check the per-drawer weight rating: in our range it runs from 11 lb to 55 lb per drawer, and heavy jeans or sweaters need the higher numbers.

Can a 9-drawer dresser be used as a TV stand?
Many can. A 63 in wide top holds a TV, and several of our models are described as working as a low TV stand. Check the TV's base width against the top, keep the TV pushed back from the front edge, and route cords so they don't hang where children can pull them. The CPSC's advice is to anchor TVs and furniture like dressers securely to the wall, push the TV back as far as possible and keep cords out of reach (CPSC).
For a mirror, a wall-mounted mirror centered above the dresser is the simplest option, since none of these models has an attached mirror.
Are 9-drawer dressers with LED lights and charging stations worth it?
A 9-drawer dresser with LED lights adds a light strip and, usually, a charging station with outlets and USB ports. It is worth it if you want a nightlight, ambient light for a bedroom or living room, or a place to charge phones without cords running to the nightstand.
- Control: our LED models use a phone app or Bluetooth to change the color and, on some, the brightness.
- Power: the dresser needs to sit near a wall outlet; plan the cord route before you anchor it.
- Warranty: on FUFU&GAGA furniture bought at fufugaga.com, LED lighting components carry a 1-year warranty, while the furniture itself has a 2-year limited warranty.
Can you use a 9-drawer dresser in the living room or dining room?
Yes. At about 15.7 inches deep, a 9-drawer dresser is close to the depth of many sideboards, so it can serve as a storage sideboard in a dining room, a media console in the living room, or a long chest in a hallway or entryway. Drawers are better than doors for small items like table linens, chargers, games and office supplies. A handle-free or wood-grain finish makes it look less like bedroom furniture.
Which style and finish should you choose?
Match the dresser to your bed and nightstands first; repeating a finish or hardware color that is already in the room makes a cohesive look. Most 9-drawer dressers fall into three style families:
- Modern dresser: clean lines, handle-free or slim pulls, and white, black or high-gloss fronts. A modern chest in white reads lighter in a small room.
- Vintage chest look: fluted or paneled fronts with metal ring pulls, knobs or gold handles.
- Wood-grain and rustic: natural, oak or walnut tones that warm up white walls and pair with wood bed frames.
Before you purchase, look past the finish to how it is crafted. Solid wood with dovetail joints is the high end; most manufactured-wood dressers use simpler butt joints reinforced with hardware, so metal slides, a finished back and stated drawer weight ratings tell you more about everyday durability.
How heavy is a 9-drawer dresser, and how long does assembly take?
The assembled dressers in this guide weigh from 96.3 lb to 198.4 lb, so plan for two people for delivery and assembly. Several listings recommend two people, and tools range from a screwdriver alone to a screwdriver, hammer and power drill. Nine drawers mean nine sets of slides and drawer boxes, so set aside an afternoon, sort hardware first and build on a rug or the box to protect the finish.
Why you should anchor a 9-drawer dresser
Dressers, chests, armoires and wardrobes are clothing storage units. In the US, units manufactured after September 1, 2023 that are free-standing, at least 27 inches tall, at least 30 lb and have at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage fall under the CPSC's clothing storage unit rule, 16 CFR part 1261, created under the STURDY law. It requires stability testing, warning labels and an anti-tip device packaged with the product (CPSC).
A tested dresser can still tip if it isn't secured. CPSC reports 234 deaths from clothing storage unit tip-overs from January 2000 through April 2022, 199 of them children, and recommends that consumers anchor furniture, including dressers, securely to the wall (CPSC). Anchor every dresser into a wall stud or with anchors rated for your wall type, load heavier items in the bottom drawers, and don't let children climb on open drawers.

FAQ
What does triple dresser mean?
A triple dresser is a wide dresser with three vertical columns of drawers, usually nine in total. It is wider than a double dresser, which has two columns and typically six drawers. In our range, triple-style dressers are about 55 to 71 inches wide, which makes them the highest-capacity horizontal dresser for a bedroom.
Should a dresser be wider than the bed?
No. A dresser doesn't need to match the bed, but similar widths look balanced when they face each other. A 60 to 63 inch triple dresser pairs well with a 60 inch queen bed, and a 70 inch dresser with a 76 inch king. More important is leaving 30 to 36 inches of floor in front of the drawers.
How do you organize a nine-drawer dresser?
Use the top row for small items like socks, underwear and accessories, the middle row for shirts and everyday clothes, and the bottom row for heavy items like jeans, sweaters and linens. Keeping the weight low also makes the dresser more stable. Drawer dividers help keep small items sorted. If two people share it, give each person one or more full columns.
What is the best material for a dresser?
Solid wood is the most durable, while MDF and other manufactured wood give a smooth, stable surface for painted, high-gloss and wood-grain finishes at a lower weight and cost. For everyday durability, the drawer slides, drawer weight rating and back panel matter as much as the panel material.
